Structural Reinforcement at North Falmouth Elementary School
SurfZone Engineering Consultants was engaged to evaluate and strengthen the existing roof framing at North Falmouth Elementary School in Falmouth, MA, after significant structural damage was identified within the wood truss system.
The investigation documented damaged truss members, compromised splices and connections, and localized roof distress. Because the conditions varied from truss to truss, the project required a combination of detailed field investigation, custom reinforcement design, new steel truss solutions, and ongoing construction support.

Challenges and Solutions

Limited access: The roof had recently been replaced, so access through the roof was not feasible.
Complex reinforcement installation: New reinforcement, splices, and long chord connections required custom detailing.
Tight summer schedule: The work had to be completed between July and the start of the new school year.
Results and Transformation
The structural repairs and reinforcement were completed within the summer construction window, allowing North Falmouth Elementary School to reopen for the new school year with the required structural work in place.
